Have you ever been working on a spreadsheet, or a word document, and been working on it for hours, and then when you get close to finishing it, oops the power glitches, and everything is gone. Time to start over again :( Autosave did not work, and your left there with a blank page. Another example would be that you have your new computer, and start adding new programs over a period of months, and years. You get it just like you like it, and you turn it on one day, and it doesn’t boot up, or it crashes on you while installing a program, or you get a virus, or spyware, and your system is sending personal information over the internet to some hacker. There are many unplanned things that can happen. Protect yourself by backing up your system on a regular basis. Saving your documents frequently while working on them. There are many software programs you can buy retail, that work really well.

If you use Windows Vista, backup is included, but you will need to setup your automatic file backup. Windows default setup, will make a restore point every time you update Windows, but you can set it up by going into your start menu, looking for the Accessories folder, and clicking it, then look for the System Tools folder, then open that folder, and you will find Backup Status and Configuration. Choose this setting.

Once you open the program, you will be presented with a few options, these will include
1) Set up automatic file backup
2) Backup now
3) Change backup settings

For now we want to choose “Set up automatic file backup”. This will open a window where you can choose which media you will save to, this will be CD, DVD, Hard disk, etc. There will also be an option to save somewhere on a network, in my case I have an external 1TB Hard disk connected to my network, so anyone on my network can use it for backup, or storage.

For most, you would use a DVD, CD, or Hard Disk. Files that this backup program will not backup are listed below.

The Back Up Files wizard backs up the most common file types. The following files are not included:
1) System files (the files that Windows needs to run)
2) Program files
3) Files stored on hard disks that are formatted using the FAT file system
4) Web-based e-mail that is not stored on your hard disk
5) Files that are in the Recycle Bin
6) Temporary files
7) User profile settings

You will be presented with check boxes, for thinks like pictures, music, email, etc. Just choose the ones you want, then choose “Next”. With the next screen it will ask you to setup a schedule when you want your system to auto backup these files. When you get your schedule setup the way you like it, then “Save settings and start backup”

No matter what may happen to your system, you can restore to your last backup. there are limitations using this backup, where a retail version will give you more control of what you back up.

There are literally dozens of reasons for power disruption, most involving catastrophic weather events, Acts of God, or unforeseen events impacting the electrical power grid or the local infrastructure.

There is another reason to install an emergency back-up power system that is rarely addressed, however, it is a valid use of the technology. As a hypothetical exercise, assume an island several miles offshore. An isolated mountaintop shares the same characteristics for this case. There is no commercial power available and installation of power lines is a very expensive proposition. To further complicate the problem, assume the island or mountain peak is uninhabited. This virtually guarantees any consideration to install power lines to the installation is so far down the list of the power company’s priorities that it is unlikely in the extreme that commercial power will ever be installed.

A building on the island houses a low-power navigational beacon and transmitter.

An emergency back-up system consisting of a DC-to-AC inverter, a deep-cycle, deep-discharge battery bank with its associated controller, a small liquid natural gas generator and a simple solar power array comprise the power system to run the beacon. In normal operation, the solar array charges the batteries and the inverter acts as a constant always-on power conditioner.

That’s a fairly hefty investment for a simple beacon, it would be advantageous to use the same location to generate additional revenue. Add a cellular phone tower and its associated transmitters and receivers. It may be necessary to increase the size of the solar array; however, other components may need upgrading, unless expansion was planned at the design and engineering phase.

A low-power AM or FM radio station remote transmitter, or a 900MHz trunking system or microwave repeater is identified as a significant revenue source. The solar array, while adequate for most applications, has limitations. However, the installation is far enough away from civilization that it is ecologically practical to install a wind generator. At this point, it becomes more practical to install a heavy duty back-up system and use the first installation as a true emergency back-up system instead of the primary power source.

As technology advances, it may become practical to install a 16-ton no-break flywheel generator, kept in motion by tides or hydroelectric power derived from a standpipe filled by snow runoff and rain. The possibilities are limited only by the amount of revenue – which would likely include government grants or subsidies for a net-zero carbon footprint – that can be realized or generated by the installation housing the equipment.

This hypothetical is a simple demonstration of power generation using off-the-shelf components and subsystems used in a constant emergency situation, in sense that power is totally unavailable and is unlikely to be available in the foreseeable future. It is a truly worse case scenario that is applicable to any routine use of an emergency back-up system.

Let me tell you a story. Last summer I had been away on vacation and was posting daily updates about my trip on my blog. On one of the last days of my vacation, I went to to log in and give a run down of my trip so far, only to find out that I couldn’t. My whole blog had been wiped. There was a index mistake, and all my contents, posts, comments – everything – was all gone. I was shocked, angry and upset. I contacted my host suitable away to see if there was anything that I could do to try and save all of the hard work I had put into the blog. There wasn’t. I didn’t have any backups of my site at all. everything I had labored for was lost. They tried to repair the index (it’s what contains all of the posts and comments, etc…) but it was no use. I was out of luck, and all that work had gone down the drain because of some silly databases error – not even my fault.

As I wrote on Backup Creator Review, I had to start all over again, from scuff. My only but of luck in this whole situation was that I commonly wrote my posts offline, in a text editor, so I had at the very least some of my content on my computer, and could re-post it again to my blog. But as you can imagine, all of my pages that were ranking hight in the lookup engines were now gone, endless 404 mistakes when people tried to visit. The first thing I did once I set the blog up again was to install a wordpress backup plugin. A wordpress backup plugin lets you backup every aspect of your blog, even the repository. It will save it to your server or to your computer, and should you ever have a situation where your blog gets corrupted or your web host has an issue, you have a full backup that you can clone and install.

I use the wordpress backup plugin from http://www.backupcreator.com, and it is the best investment I have ever made. Backup creator will create an complete backup of your blog immediately. From the posts to the repository, to comments made by visitors and all of your themes and plug ins. With backup creator you can also move your blog to a new host just as effortlessly as you would write your next blog post. Their clone-it technologies lets you “clone” your total setup, and then migrate it to a new web host. All of those sophisticated features aside, this wordpress backup plugin protects your hard work. In the event anything happens, you’ll be ready with a backup in hand, and your visitors won’t even know anything happened.
